Zikr, according to the book Fiqh-Us-Sunnah by Sheik Sayyed As Sabeeq, mentions that, "All words of praise and glory to Allah, extolling His Perfect Attributes of Power and Majesty, Beauty and Sublimeness, whether one utters them by tongue or says them silently in one's heart, are known as Zikr or remembrance of Allah."
Remembering Allah is the foundation of good deeds.
The more we remember Allah, the closer we will get to Him.
You can see that our greatest example, Prophet Mohammed (peace and blessings be upon him), used to remember Allah at all times. So you know Zikr is good, but what do you get in return for remembering Allah?
"Indeed, the Muslim men and Muslim women, the believing men and believing women, the obedient men and obedient women, the truthful men and truthful women, the patient men and patient women, the humble men and humble women, the charitable men and charitable women, the fasting men and fasting women, the men who guard their private parts and the women who do so, and the men who remember Allah often and the women who do so - for them Allah has prepared forgiveness and a great reward." [Quran: 33:35]
"Those who dedicate themselves to regular remembrance of God find peace and tranquillity in their hearts, and a wonderful release from the stresses and strains of day-to-day life."
ALLAH (SWT) Says in Quran Kareem:
فَاذْكُرُونِي أَذْكُرْكُمْ وَاشْكُرُوا لِي وَلَا تَكْفُرُونِ
So remember Me; I will remember you. And be grateful to Me and do not deny Me.
[Quran 2:152]
And when you have completed the prayer, remember Allah standing, sitting, or [lying] on your sides. But when you become secure, re-establish [regular] prayer. Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers a decree of specified times.
[Quran 4:103]
[Quran 4:103]
Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah . Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured.
[Quran 13:28]
[Quran 13:28]
O you who have believed, remember Allah with much remembrance
[Quran 33:41]
And when the prayer has been concluded, disperse within the land and seek from the bounty of Allah , and remember Allah often that you may succeed.
[Quran 62:10]
[Quran 33:41]
And when the prayer has been concluded, disperse within the land and seek from the bounty of Allah , and remember Allah often that you may succeed.
[Quran 62:10]
"Power of Tongue (Dhiker)"
Let me give you an example of how powerful this tongue is how powerful these words are that we utter we don’t even realize what we say this is why we do not know what we go on about.
Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) said that: On the Night of Mir’aj (Night of Journey), I saw an ocean and this ocean was so big that only ALLAH (SWT) Know the limits of this ocean and on the side of this ocean was an angel taking the form of a bird and when a person says:
(سبحان الله)
SUBHANALLAH
(This angel moves from its place.)
When a person says:
(الحمد لله)
AlHamdulillah
(All praise is for Allah.)
The angel open his wings. And the angels has 70,000 wings and the angel open 70,000 wings.
When he says:
Allah hu akbar wala ilaha illallah
(Allah is Greater there is no God except ALLAH). - This angels begins to fly.
When he says:
ALLAH HU AKBAR
(Allah is Greater).
The angel dives inside the ocean.
And when he says:
(لاحول ولا قوة إلا بالله العلي العظيم)
La hawla wala quwata illah billah Hil Ilyl Azeem
(There is no power and no strength except with ALLAH)
The angel comes out of the water and it flaps his wings 70,000 wings from every wing 70,000 drops of water fall from every drop of water ALLAH (SWT) creates one angel from every drop of water 70000 drops of water 70000 wings from every drop ALLAH creates an angel and this angel glorifies that all Mighty ALLAH and his angel keeps on asking ALLAH to forgive him right the day of Judgement.
Yet it takes not even 2 seconds to say these words.
When a person says:
(لا إله إلا الله محمد رسول الله)
La illah ilallah Muhammad ur Rasool Allah
(There is no god but Allah and Muhammad is the prophet of Allah.)
ALLAH has created a pillar next to the Arsh (Throne), and soon as a servant of ALLAH utter this word this pillars begins to shake in front of the All Mighty ALLAH. The all Mighty ALLAH says to the Pillar.
SUBHANALLAH
(This angel moves from its place.)

AlHamdulillah
(All praise is for Allah.)
The angel open his wings. And the angels has 70,000 wings and the angel open 70,000 wings.

Stay firm do not move the pillar says Oh ALLAH how can I stay firm when the sayer of this word has not been forgiven ALLAH says stay firm now the sayer of this word has been forgiven.
How long does it take to say:
(لا إله إلا الله محمد رسول الله)
LA ILLAH ILLALLAH MUHAMMAD UR RASOOL ALLAH
How long does it take to say:
(لا إله إلا الله محمد رسول الله)
LA ILLAH ILLALLAH MUHAMMAD UR RASOOL ALLAH
(There is no god but Allah and Muhammad is the Prophet of Allah)
We orphan these words at its mothering time and this pillar is shaking infront of the arsh (Throne) of ALLAH (SWT) according to the 'Hadith of Tabrani'.
When a person says:
(سُبْحَانَ اللّهِ وَ بِحَمْدِهِ)
SUBHAN ALLAH WAB HAMD
(I praise Allah (or All praise if to Allah) above all attributes that do not suit His Majesty).
Will not even take a second Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said 124000 deeds are written in his account (سُبْحَانَ اللّهِ وَ بِحَمْدِهِ) SUBHAN ALLAH WAB HAMD.
And the angels have written it when a person says:

La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharikalahu ahadan samadan Lam yulid wa lam yulad wa lam yakulahu kufuwan ahad!(There is no diety worthy of worship except ALLAH. ALLAH is alone, without partner.
ALLAH does not beget, Nor was ALLAH Begotten and there is non worthy of worship except ALLAH)
It take 3-4 seconds and the angels according to the Hadith of Tabrani Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) has said that the angels have written 2 million deed in his account 2 MILLION DEED! Today you and I we have no time for small things in life we thinking about BIG THINGS BIG PROBLEMS yet it will be these things that will help us tomorrow on the day of judgement
The difference between the one who makes Zikr and the one who does not is well explained in this Hadith. Abu Musa Al-Ash`ari (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet said, "The similitude of one who remembers his Lord and one who does not remember Him, is like that of the living and the dead.'' (Al-Bukhari and Muslim).
All right, so we know what Zikr means and why we should do it. Here are some more specific things we can say to remember Allah.
Abu Huraira reported that the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) said, "I love repeating Subhan Allah , Walhamdu lillah , wa La ilaha ill-Allah, wa Allahu Akbar (Glorified is Allah, all praise is due to Allah, and there is no God but Allah, Allah is the greatest) more than all that the sun shines upon.'' (Muslim and Tirmidhi).
Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) said, "He who recites after every prayer: Subhan Allah (Allah is free from imperfection) 33 times; Alhamdu lillah (praise be to Allah) 33 times; Allahu Akbar (Allah is Greatest) 33 times; and completes the hundred with: La ilaha illallahu, wahdahu la sharika lahu, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu, wa Huwa `ala kulli shai'in Qadir (there is no true god except Allah. He is One and He has no partner with Him. His is the sovereignty and His is the praise, and He is Omnipotent), will have all his sins pardoned even if they may be as large as the foam on the surface of the sea.'' (Muslim).
